Investigadores británicos realizaron una serie de experimentos para disminuir la resistencia al agua creada por organismos vivos en el casco de los barcos.

Según el texto publicado en la revista Noticias de la Ciencia y la Tecnología, la acidificación marina pronosticada por el Grupo Intergubernamental de Expertos sobre el Cambio Climático para dentro de unos 50 años, cambiará la composición de las comunidades de seres vivos responsables del biofouling o bioincrustación.

El término hace referencia a la acumulación de organismos que se adhieren a la parte sumergida de las embarcaciones, tales como algas, mejillones y percebes; el fenómeno aumenta la resistencia al avance por el agua, y en consecuencia el consumo de combustible.

Larger Propeller = Larger Savings?

The drive for ship owners to measure the fuel consumption for the propulsion of their ships to the widest possible extent at any load has resulted in the adoption of slow or even super slow steaming as standard practice.

This slow steaming drive results in the operation of ships at lower than normal service ship speeds compared to the ascribed Normal Continuous Rating(NCR) speed, as per engine type, make or model, which can result in reduced propulsion power utilisation. El presidente de la Ciudad Autónoma, Juan José Imbroda, avanzó ayer que el contrato marítimo tendrá adjudicatario a finales de esta semana, una vez que los técnicos de la Dirección General de la Marina Mercante terminen de valorar las justificaciones que han presentado Trasmediterránea, Baleària y Naviera Armas por las bajas ofertas económicas que hicieron respecto al presupuesto de licitación, que era de 25 millones de euros.

Higher deliveries of container ships, especially ultra-large container ships (ULCSs), will make the sector more challenging in the short term.

IHS Maritime's Sea-web.com data show 1,906,008 teu of container ships that would be delivered this year, including 70 ULCSs.

Last year 1,517,125 teu of container ships were delivered, including 60 ULCSs.

Italian broker Banchero Costa noted that trade growth has been languishing at low single-digit percentages.

The company said, "The market remains challenging as on the supply side there is the lurking issue of overcapacity and damaging price wars."

In response, carriers have been consolidating via mergers or through alliances.
