Earth’s climate swings increasingly out of balance

23 March 2026

Geneva, Switzerland (WMO) – The Earth’s climate is more out of balance than at any time in observed history, as greenhouse gas concentrations drive continued warming of the atmosphere and ocean and melting of ice, according to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). These rapid and large-scale changes have occurred within a few decades but will have harmful repercussions for hundreds – and potentially thousands – of years.

The Brazilian Government opened bidding proposals on April 1 for a dredging project in the Mirim Lagoon waterway with an estimated investment of BRL52.7 million ($10.5 million).

This initiative, which forms part of the "new growth acceleration programme", involves the preparation of engineering designs and environmental studies alongside the implementation of nautical signalling services.

The Mirim Lagoon is an estuarine body of water situated on the border between southern Brazil and eastern Uruguay.

The Ministry of Ports and Airports stated that the goal of the work is to improve inland navigation by ensuring consistent depths and greater operational safety. Officials expect the intervention to lead to more efficient

New milestone for S-100 ecosystem as Phase 1 enters into force

March 16, 2026

Mariners and ocean data users can now access and use the operational version of the Phase 1 S-100 product specifications in real-world environments. The S-100 framework will facilitate safer arrivals and manoeuvres, a more efficient traffic flow, a more sustainable maritime travel, and seamless port operations.

By enabling data interoperability within a single integrated system, S-100 connects the data layers relied on by stakeholders across a wide range of applications, from port logistics to real-time navigation, as well as for environmental monitoring purposes.

In contrast with the currently used S-57 standard, systems using S-100 data will be able to be updated in near-real time, giving mariners the most up-to-date information possible about the situation, elements and conditions surrounding a

Residents along Mexico's Gulf Coast fear more crude oil will wash onto beaches in Tabasco and Veracruz states nearly a month after the first signs of contamination were detected, as authorities investigate the source of the spill.

The contamination has affected 230 kilometres (143 miles) of shoreline and 39 communities in the two states, according to the Gulf of Mexico Reef Corridor Network, a coalition of fishing, indigenous and environmental groups.

Many affected communities depend on fishing and tourism and worry the spill could damage their livelihoods ahead of the Easter holidays, when beaches typically attract visitors.

The group said the crude has reached Ostion lagoon in Veracruz, a
