A new phase for safety of navigation

In September 2025, Brazil reached a historic milestone in the modernization of nautical cartography with the conclusion of its first electronic navigational chart (ENC) produced under the international S-101 standard. The work, led by the Brazilian Navy Hydrographic Center (CHM) under the authority of the Directorate of Hydrography and Navigation (DHN), covers the area of the Port of Suape in the state of Pernambucoa – a strategic region for national maritime trade.

This initiative represents Brazil’s definitive entry into the global transition towards the S-100 framework, which is redefining how nautical data is structured, integrated and distributed. The completion of this project marks a new

Navigation system refit for advanced polar research vessel

Anschütz has successfully completed the refit of the integrated navigation system for RRS Sir David Attenborough. Since entering service in 2021, the polar research vessel has been equipped with navigation systems from Anschütz. As part of a recent refit, Anschütz has now supplied the vessel with a new, state-of-the-art SYNAPSIS NX integrated navigation system (INS), along with upgrades to the radar systems.

The new technology enhances the stability and performance of the bridge system, supporting safe navigation even under the most challenging polar conditions.

Built by British shipyard Cammell Laird, the RRS Sir David Attenborough is among the world’s most advanced polar research vessels. Measuring 129m in length, the vessel operates in Antarctica under the stringent requirements

Weather-Wise Navigation: the Five Sensible Elements

M. Public

Wind, Visibility, Precipitation and Sea State Explained for Safe Navigation

QUICK ANSWER

The five sensible elements of marine weather are:
► Wind – The primary concern for all vessels affecting speed, direction and safety
► Sea State – Wave height and conditions created by wind and swell
► Visibility – Fog, precipitation and atmospheric clarity affecting navigation
► Precipitation – Rain, snow and their impact on operations
► Temperature – Affects crew comfort and in extremes vessel safety through icing or heat stress

Why remembering these elements matters:
• Wind determines vessel performance and route efficiency
• Sea state creates immediate physical threats to vessel stability
• Poor visibility increases collision risk and navigation errors
• Temperature extremes can cause deck icing or crew heat exhaustion
• Combined observations provide forecasting capability
• Multiple changing factors indicate approaching weather systems
• Understanding relationships between elements improves decision-making
• Shipboard observations supplement professional forecasts
• Proper weather knowledge reduces unnecessary risks
• Better planning
