The United States effectively treats foreign seafarers more harshly than any other group that enters the country without breaking the law.
The general rule is that all persons who are not U.S. nationals or permanent residents must have a visa to enter the United States. Persons desiring to become U.S. citizens or permanent residents must obtain an immigrant visa. Most other persons desiring to enter the United States for a limited period of time must obtain a nonimmigrant visa. Hellenic ship owners control 46.72% of the EU fleet based on dwt tonnage, a token of the size of the country's maritime industry, despite the challenging conditions in global shipping. As such, Hellas has remained the No1 maritime nation globally, controlling a total of 3,669 vessels (over 1,000 GT), which make up for the 16.16% of the global fleet, in terms of deadweight tonnage. This according to yesterday's message by Mr. Theodoros Veniamis, President of the Union of Greek Shipowners (UGS), on the occasion of the Posidonia Exhibition, which is to be held this coming June, attracting exhibitors from more than 93 countries.
