President Park Geun-hye on Tuesday officially announced the resignation of Maritime Minister Lee Ju-young, raising the possibility that she would carry out a major reshuffle soon to put state agendas back on track following recent scandals involving her ex-aide.

During a Cabinet meeting held at the government complex in Sejong, Park said the meeting was the last that Minister Lee would attend as he would be stepping down. Lee had offered to quit several times after the search for missing bodies from the sunken ferry Sewol was completed.

SEJONG, Dec. 23 (Yonhap) -- Maritime Minister Lee Ju-young resigned Tuesday after handling the aftermath of April's deadly ferry sinking that claimed more than 300 lives.

President Park Geun-hye announced the minister's resignation during a Cabinet meeting held at the government complex in Sejong, saying Lee's dedication to the recovery efforts deeply moved the victims' families and the general public.

"When the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries was going through the most difficult time following the Sewol accident, the victims' families and the people were deeply moved by the dedication (Lee) showed toward the recovery efforts with every part of himself by remaining at the site in Jindo for 136 days," Park said.

El Ministro de Asuntos Marítimos de Corea del Sur, Lee Ju Young, ha presentado este martes su dimisión tras su gestión del hundimiento en abril del ferry 'Sewol', suceso que se saldó con la muerte de 302 personas, según ha informado la agencia surcoreana de noticias Yonhap.

La presidenta del país, Park Geun Hye, ha anunciado la renuncia de Lee durante una reunión de su Gobierno, destacando su dedicación durante los esfuerzos de búsqueda y rescate de los cadáveres de las víctimas de la tragedia.
