Amanece en el horizonte mediterráneo, el sol lentamente da unas pinceladas en el cielo y este, tímido, se proyecta esfumándose entre los destellos de espuma sobre el mar. Hoy despierta más rosa que otros días. El sonido de las gaviotas me suena casi igual al de los albatros. No es fácil escribir un artículo sobre mi tierra natal. No me es indiferente la memoria que me invade de imágenes en aquellos parajes costeros de estepa, meseta, viento y oleaje de experiencias vividas

Pedro Menéndez de Avilés (February 15, 1519 – September 17, 1574) was Comendador of the Holy Cross of Zarza of the Knights of Santiago, Captain-General of the Ocean Sea, Governor of Cuba, Captain-General of the West, Adelantado of Florida, and Founder of St. Augustine. He faithfully served the Spanish Crown as a Captain-General of the Royal Armadas for 32 years.

A native of northern Spain, Don Pedro Menéndez de Avilés was born on Saturday, February 15, 1519, in the Principality of Asturias, in the seaport of Avilés. EN el parque del Oeste de Madrid había antiguamente un monumento en recuerdo a los héroes de las guerras coloniales, que fue destruido en la guerra civil; en su lugar se encuentra actualmente el monumento dedicado a Simón Bolívar.

No es el único monumento levantado en su memoria en España, también lo hay en Cádiz, en Sevilla o en Barcelona entre otras localidades. Aun siendo un personaje que luchó contra España, es justo reconocer la importancia que en el proceso histórico hispanoamericano ha tenido, pero siempre y cuando ello no suponga el olvido de los nuestros, aquellos que lucharon y murieron por España.

In 1497,John Cabot (Giovanni Cabotto) set off on a voyage to Asia. On his way he, like Christopher Columbus, ran into an island off the coast of North America. As a result, Cabot became the second European to discover North America, thus laying an English claim which would be followed up only after an interval of over one hundred years. With such an interlude, his voyage seems mainly of academic interest. Although it is true that prior discovery was often used as a justification for colonization,1 the great amount of time between discovery and colonizing reduces Cabots importance to a minimum in this regard.
