Thirty-three days have passed since the Sewol-ho ferry sank off Korea's southwestern coast. taking with it the lives of so many young people. Within the last hour, President Park Geun-hye has directly apologized for the government's failure to prevent the tragedy. This during a nationally televised address. Sewol sailors indicted on charges of homicide

The captain of the Sewol and three other key crew members were indicted on charges of homicide Thursday. The 11 other crew members were indicted for manslaughter.

The four key sailors — the captain, chief mate, second mate and the chief engineer — were charged with homicide out of willful negligence. All crewmen are accused of violating the rescue rule and negligence resulting in death.

“(The investigation team) charged the captain with homicide because he did not take any measures in the whole process from veering to passengers’ evacuation despite being responsible for operating the ferry and the safety of the passengers,” said the investigators in an interim report.

The 68-year old captain is also charged

A former newsroom chief of the Korean Broadcasting System has thrown the public broadcaster into turmoil by exposing the presidential office’s meddling in its news programming.

Kim Si-gon, who resigned as director of the network’s news bureau on May 9 over a controversial comment on the victims of the Sewol ferry disaster, dropped a bombshell revelation at a general meeting of KBS reporters on May 16. Kim, who had led the newsroom for more than a year, cited a recent example of Cheong Wa Dae’s intervention in the broadcaster’s programming of news reports. The Sewol tragedy has left many to blame.


The captain of the ill-fated ferry escaped, leaving hundreds of passengers trapped in the sinking boat. Maritime authorities closed their eyes to the ferry operator’s illegal business activities for years. But the country’s mainstream media also failed in their jobs right in the midst of the disaster.

 
Public criticism has been mounting against the Korean media as it relied too much on the government’s inconsistent and inaccurate announcements, releasing them online or on TV without verifying them.

Reporters also came under heavy fire for intruding on the victims’ grieving families, taking pictures
