Vietnam has helped ensure peace in the South China Sea dispute with Beijing by following the Philippines in seeking UN arbitration, Manila said, despite the fact that Beijing has refused to take part.

Beijing claims almost the entire energy-rich South China Sea but Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines, Vietnam and Taiwan also have claims. Only Brunei has not occupied and garrisoned territory in the potential flashpoint in the region.

Vietnam on Thursday submitted its position to a UN arbitration tribunal initiated by the Philippines over the festering dispute. China called on Vietnam to respect its sovereignty and has refused UN arbitration.

"The Vietnamese position is helpful in terms of promoting the rule of law and in finding peaceful and nonviolent solutions

New Form of Ice to Store Energy

Marex

BY MarEx 2014-12-14 16:08:30

The discovery of a new form of ice could lead to an improved understanding of our planet’s geology, potentially helping to unlock new solutions in the production, transportation and storage of energy. Ice XVI, the least dense of all known forms of ice, has a highly symmetric cage-like structure that can trap gaseous molecules to form compounds known as clathrates or gas hydrates.

Such clathrates are now known to store enormous quantities of methane and other gases in the permafrost as well as in vast sediment layers hundreds of metres deep at the bottom of the ocean floor. Their potential decomposition could therefore have significant consequences for our planet, making an

NORTHERN HEMISPHERE: Starting from 1 January 2015, vessels entering the North American and North European emission control areas (ECAs) will have to comply with the revised permitted limit of sulphur in marine fuel.

Only a few weeks away, edgy marine insurers have expressed concerns over potential technical issues regarding the regulations.

Oslo-headquartered Skuld has reminded that existing engine rooms and tanks were originally designed for heavy fuel oil (HFO), and therefore extensive preparation beforehand will be needed to make sure the vessels are able to adjust to

Jones Act renaissance

IHS Maritime’s Greg Miller explains why US yards see stronger order levels in the tanker, container, and offshore sectors

Three external drivers have converged, pushing production of ships for the United States’ protected Jones Act trades to unusually high levels.

The first factor is surging domestic oil production, which creates a greater need to transport petroleum products and crude in coastwise trades. Such cargoes must be carried aboard US-built tankers and barges.

Second, the daunting requirement that 0.1% sulphur bunker fuel be used within the North American Emission Control Area (ECA), which extends 370km off US and Canadian , comes into effect 1 January 2015. For operators of Jones Act container ships and product tankers, and
