Polar Code and SOLAS amendments approved The MSC approved, for consideration with a view to adoption at its November 2014 session (MSC 94), the draft new SOLAS chapter XIV “Safety measures for ships operating in polar waters”, which would make mandatory the Introduction and part I-A of the International Code for Ships Operating in Polar Waters (the Polar Code).
The MSC also approved, in principle, the draft Polar Code, with a view to adoption in conjunction with the adoption of the associated draft new SOLAS chapter XIV.
 
Matters related to the safety of navigation and communication were referred to the Sub-Committee on Navigation, Communications and Search and Rescue (NCSR), which meets in July, for finalization of the relevant chapters.

IMO to discuss amendments to maritime safety standards

The International Maritime Organisation's (IMO) Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) is to adopt amendments to the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS), relating to lifeboat and passenger ship safety.

The MSC is currently discussing the proposed plans at its on-going 93rd session, which will run through 23 May at IMO's London headquarters.

The meeting will consider issues relating to subdivision and damage stability, with recommendations from the Experts Group on Formal Safety Assessment report, the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) study on damage stability of roll-on/roll-off passenger ships and studies from the GOAL-based Damage Stability project (GOALDS).

Iridium Proposes to Enhance GMDSS Coverage and Redundancy for Maritime Safety Communications                       

MCLEAN, Va., Apr 24, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE via COMTEX) --

Iridium Communications today announced it has formally submitted a comprehensive application to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) through the United States for the provision of mobile satellite communications in the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS). If the application is approved, Iridium could begin providing GMDSS services in late 2015.

Today, ship operators are forced to carry multiple communications systems to meet GMDSS requirements as well as the operational communications needs of the vessel. Iridium's entrance into GMDSS communications will be supported by an array of maritime communications systems, giving the industry the option of a single, affordable communications terminal to satisfy both

Briefing: 13, April 23, 2014 Increased limits of liability for the death of, or personal injury to, a passenger on a ship from 23 April 2014

 

The Athens Convention relating to the Carriage of Passengers and their Luggage by Sea, 2002, which substantially raises the limits of liability for the death of, or personal injury to, a passenger on a ship, enters into force on 23 April 2014.

The higher limits of liability will apply to ships registered in the following States which have ratified the 2002 treaty: Albania, Belgium, Belize, Bulgaria, Croatia, Denmark, Greece, Latvia, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Palau, Panama, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Serbia, Syrian Arab Republic and the United Kingdom.

Additionally, the Convention is mandatory for European Union Member States
