El libro de órdenes de construcción de portacontenedores global está a punto de alcanzar los 10 millones de TEUs por primera vez. Actualmente se sitúa en 9,95 millones de TEUs, y cualquier nuevo contrato de construcción naval podría llevarlo a superar ese umbral histórico, según Alphaliner.

Since 2017, China has been the largest shipbuilder in the world. Of the 89 million deadweight tons of commercial ships built in 2024, 50.8 million of them (57%) were Chinese.1 China has a similarly large fraction (59%) of orders for new ships worldwide. Of the 20 largest shipyards in the world by the size of their order book, 14 of them are Chinese. According to the US Navy, China’s shipbuilding capacity is over 200 times that of the US. In 2023 China delivered 972 commercial ships; the US delivered 7.

The Government of Canada has announced that it has shortlisted two major shipbuilders to continue the procurement process for Canada’s future patrol submarine project (CPSP), which will replace the current fleet of Victoria-class submarines.

Fincantieri, an Italian shipbuilder, has filed a US$100 million lawsuit against Owens Corning and its subsidiary, the Paroc Group, claiming the companies supplied faulty fire insulation panels that were fitted on three cruise ships and eight military vessels.

The case was filed in the U.S. District Court in Ohio, where Owens Corning is headquartered. Fincantieri alleges that Paroc Group, which Owens Corning acquired in 2018, obtained fire safety certificates by submitting altered materials for testing. The shipbuilder accuses the company of fraud, misrepresentation, and putting lives at risk by selling non-compliant products.

The insulation in question came from Paroc’s “Navis” line, a stonewool product marketed as a lightweight, fire-safe solution for steel decks
