Methods for Accurate Oil and Gas Measurement

measurement/

Oil and gas measurement is vital for the industry to ensure accurate sales and compliance with regulations. Measurements are taken before oil and gas leave the production site.

Measuring Oil

Crude oil refers to unrefined oil extracted directly from an oil well. This raw mixture contains hydrocarbon fluids, water, and various impurities, which is why it’s termed “crude.” In its unprocessed state, crude oil is primarily traded as a commodity.

Crude oil is measured using three primary units:

Barrels (BBL)

  • A barrel holds 42 gallons.
  • This unit is commonly used on royalty statements.

SI Units

  • In countries using the metric system, oil volumes are measured in metric tonnes (mt).

Metric Tonnes

  • Widely used in the former Soviet Union and Europe.
  • One metric ton = 2,204

Subsea 7 secured a contract valued between $150 million and $300 million from Noble Energy EG, a Chevron company, for installation work offshore Equatorial Guinea. The agreement covers the subsea scope of the Aseng gas monetisation project.

The project involves a single-well tieback connecting the Aseng field to the existing Alen platform. Subsea 7 stated the scope of work covers the transport and installation of approximately 19 kilometres of rigid production flowline and 20 kilometres of umbilicals.

Associated subsea structures and tie-ins will be installed in water depths of 800 metres (2,625 feet). Project management and engineering are scheduled

Rooftop solar photovoltaic systems account for 20% of Puerto Rico’s capacity mix

Data source: U.S. Energy Information Administration, Electric Power Monthly, and Puerto Rico Energy Bureau, Quarterly Report on System Data
Note: Other includes conventional hydropower, landfill gas and other gases, onshore wind, and utility-scale batteries.

Rooftop solar generating capacity in Puerto Rico totaled 1,456 megawatts (MW) at the end of 2025, 20% of the overall capacity mix. Rooftop solar capacity has increased faster than other sources over the past decade. Between 2016 and 2025 rooftop solar installations accounted for 81% of the new generating capacity in Puerto Rico, according to data from our Electric Power Monthly and Puerto Rico Energy Bureau’s (PREB) Quarterly Report on System Data. In 2025, rooftop solar became the second-largest capacity source, after petroleum liquids capacity (3,671 MW), and surpassed natural gas capacity (1,391 MW).
