How to Tell Time With Stars?

Did you know that you can tell time at night without a watch or a clock? All you need to do is to step out, look up at the sky, and locate the Big Dipper and the North Star.

Use the Big Dipper to find the North Star.

And then, with just a little bit of imagination and math you can do what explorers, adventurers, and astronomers have been doing for centuries—tell time using the stars!

What is time?

Northern Hemisphere Stars

Before you begin learning how to tell time using the Big Dipper and the North Star, keep in mind that because these are mostly Northern Hemisphere stars. Those residing in mid-Northern Hemisphere latitudes—40 degrees North and above—are best positioned

MSC.1/Circ.1662 - Guidelines for Anchor Handling Winches

The Maritime Safety Committee, at its 107th session (31 May to 9 June 2023), having considered a proposal by the Sub-Committee on Ship Systems and Equipment, at its eighth session, with a view to ensuring a uniform approach towards the application of SOLAS regulation II-1/3-13, adopted by resolution MSC.532(107), approved Guidelines for anchor handling winches, as set out in the annex.

2 Member States are invited to use the annexed Guidelines when applying SOLAS regulation II-1/3-13 and to bring them to the attention of ship designers, shipyards, shipowners, equipment manufacturers and other organizations and parties concerned.

 

ANNEX

GUIDELINES FOR ANCHOR HANDLING WINCHES

1 Application These Guidelines support the application of SOLAS regulation II-1/3-13 for anchor handling winches, associated equipment and loose gear used in association with anchor handling winches.

2 Definitions For the purpose of these Guidelines, the following definitions apply:

ABSTRACT

The purpose of the article is to present the goal of optimization of transport and logistics processes, followed by literature review in the field of optimization methods. The optimization methods were categorized and the most commonly used methods were listed. The tasks of static and dynamic optimization were formulated. An example of the single-criterion static and dynamic optimization and multi-criteria game optimization are given.
