Tip-off of ferry tragedy raid probed

May 09,2014  A Coast Guard official allegedly tipped off the Korean Register of Shipping (KRS) an hour before a prosecution raid on its headquarters in Busan to search for evidence of regulatory irregularities that could have caused the sinking of the Sewol ferry.

According to the Busan District Prosecutors’ Office and the Coast Guard, a 41-year-old Coast Guard official surnamed Lee sent a text message on April 24 to a legal team director at the shipping industry classification and inspecting agency, telling him the prosecutors would raid his office in an hour.

“The raid and seizure team is on its way in an hour,” read the message.

The prosecutors, who are looking into possible malpractice or corrupt links between the KRS and the Chonghaejin

SEOUL, May 13 (Xinhua) -- South Korea's prosecutors said Tuesday they would summon the suspected owner of the sunken ferry Sewol's operator, Chonghaejin Marine, later this week over allegations of corruption.

Incheon District Prosecutors' Office has ordered Yoo Byung-eun, 73, who is widely believed to be the de facto owner of Chonghaejin Marine, to appear at the prosecutors' office by 10 a.m. on Friday, Yonhap news agency reported.

Prosecutors said Yoo and his family members may now facing accusations including embezzlement, dereliction of duty, tax evasion and bribery.

Prosecutors on Monday also issued arrest warrant for Yoo's eldest son Yoo Dae-gyun after he disobeyed summons. He was the biggest shareholder of four affiliates of their family business including

Las estadísticas y los registros oficiales pueden reflejar gráficas que suponen una progresiva mejoría, pero la dura realidad, el día a día, lo que evidencia es que la siniestralidad en la flota civil siguen siendo muy elevada. Compárense los datos aquí recogidos con los de la aviación civil o los del ferrocarril, y se apreciarán las diferencias.

Sorprende igualmente el creciente número de barcos europeos implicados en accidentes marítimos.

La política de Marina Civil de la Europa de las Azores está teniendo efectos muy negativos para este sector.
