Madrid (EP).- Al menos tres personas han muerto y un centenar han sido  rescatadas tras el naufragio de un ferry en  las costas de la isla de Leyte, en el este de Filipinas, han  informado las autoridades, que han reconocido que desconocen el número exacto de  personas que viajaban a bordo de la embarcación. Además, hay tres personas  desaparecidas.

Los guardacostas han explicado que el 'Maharkila II' partió del puerto de  Liloan con una tripulación de 84 personas, según la lista de pasajeros, en la  que figuran

MANILA, Philippines —  Rescuers saved about 100 people overnight and recovered two bodies from a ferry that sank in rough seas after encountering steering trouble in the central Philippines, officials said Sunday.

Coast guard Capt. Joseph Coyme said search and rescue efforts by air and sea would continue because it was uncertain how many passengers and crewmembers were on the M/V Maharlika II. The domestic ferry sank late Saturday after listing and being lashed by strong wind and waves whipped up by a storm north of the ferry’s path.

Around 100 survivors have been rescued by two passing foreign ships and another ferry deployed

U.S. maritime inspectors found leaky lifeboats or faulty fire doors on several cruise liners last year after mounting a major review in the wake of several highly-publicized scandals in the booming industry.

A forum organized in Washington by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) heard about the problems on Tuesday.

Captain Eric Christensen of the U.S. Coast Guard said 140 cruise ships — the majority of them flagged in other countries — were subjected to inspection in U.S. ports last year.

Costa Concordia was delivered in 2006 and would have been designed to satisfy the SOLAS 90 deterministic damage regulations rather than the current SOLAS 2009 probabilistic damage stability regulations. SOLAS 90 specified the number of flooded contiguous watertight compartments that the vessel should be capable of withstanding based on the factor of subdivision (F);

  • for F between 0.33 ­ 0.5 two compartments.
  • for F equal to 0.33 or less the three compartments
