Guidance on security certification for seafarers agreed
Guidance on training and certification requirements for ship security officers and seafarers with designated security duties was agreed by the Sub-Committee on Human Element, Training and Watchkeeping (HTW), when it met for its first session from 17 to 21 February 2014 IMO.

The circulars agreed by the Sub-Committee aim to address practical difficulties seafarers have reportedly experienced in obtaining the necessary security certification under the 2010 Manila amendments to the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) and STCW Code.

The guidance recommends that, until 1 July 2015, relevant training under section 13 (Training, drills and exercises on ship security) of the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code should

French maritime vocational school Lycée Maritime Jacques Cassard in Nantes will use Kongsberg Maritime's advanced engine room simulator to train its students on marine engine operations from 750kW to at least 3000kW engineer level.

Instructors have free reign to create engine failure scenarios based on real conditions to test students' reactions and their ability to track faults and restore the engine to normal operations, as if they were in a real engine room.

The K-Sim engine delivery will consist of an instructor station and eight student stations, with two engine models: MAN B&W 5L90MC L11 (Very Large Crude Carrier) and K-Sim Engine MaK 8M32C M11 (Trawler).

Integrated Simulation Centre (ISC)

The Integrated Simulation Centre (ISC) has an array of simulators that offer a wide range of scenarios to provide realistic training for ship officers and crew.

The ISC, or Integrated Simulation Centre, was set up to further boost the quality and efficiency of maritime training conducted in Singapore using simulators. Its simulators offer different realistic scenarios for training of ship officers and crew in a risk-free environment.

Although developed primarily for the training of shipboard personnel, the ISC is also capable of conducting marine research and development for port planning. ISC supports the CSS function of conducting assessment of seafarers for certification and licensing using its simulators.

Vision

To become an international leader in marine simulator-based training and research & development.
