Summary
Since 1992 the Transportation Safety Board (TSB) has made 42 recommendations concerning fishing safety, and many of these recommendations have been acted on. However, despite the efforts of the Board and others in government and the private sector, many of the causes of fishing accidents today are the same as those identified by the TSB two decades ago. Most significantly, between 1999 and 2008, an average of 14 people died in fishing accidents each year. Consequently, in August 2009, the TSB began a broad safety issues investigation into accidents involving commercial fishing vessels in Canada. This report sets out the process followed in the investigation, identifies why certain causes of accidents persist year after year, and provides a way forward that would make the industry safer.

Esta campaña es fundamental para la investigación de las principales especies pelágicas comerciales de interés para la flota española
El buque oceanográfico “Miguel Oliver”, del Ministerio de Agricultura, Pesca y Alimentación, ha iniciado hoy, desde el puerto de Vigo, la campaña oceanográfica CAREVA 0322, que tiene como principal objetivo la estimación de biomasa desovante de caballa y la producción de huevos de jurel, además de recopilar diversa información a lo largo de la plataforma norte de la Península Ibérica y el Golfo de Vizcaya.
Durante la campaña, que se prolongará hasta el próximo 9 de abril, se realizarán prospecciones acústicas y pescas pelágicas para obtener datos biológicos de hembras de caballa y jurel, además de arrastres con redes de plancton para el estudio de huevos

BRUSELAS – El Consejo Europeo aprobó ayer un acuerdo entre los Veintisiete y el Reino Unido sobre las posibilidades de pesca para 2022, lo que facilitará a la flota comunitaria continuar con sus capturas en el Atlántico y el Mar del Norte. El acuerdo establece los derechos de pesca de cerca de un centenar de poblaciones compartidas en aguas de la UE y el Reino Unido, incluido el límite de captura total permisible (TAC) para cada especie.
Así, este acuerdo supondrá una rebaja del 20% en el cupo de merluza del norte

An official investigation into the death of an elderly fisherman who drowned off the Donegal coast two years ago concluded fatigue may have been a contributory factor in the fatal incident.
A report by the Marine Casualty Investigation Board said the victim had been alone on his boat for 10 hours on a small vessel which was subject to a constant Atlantic swell which would induce fatigue in anyone of any age.

Ocean Ark is a self-propelled floating fish farm (OATECH)
A group based in Chile has received design approval for what it believes can be a revolutionary ship to improve the farming and production of fish. The Ocean Ark, a concept for a floating, offshore, self-propelled aquaculture vessel, received an Approval in Principle from the Italian ship classification society RINA.
The vessel which is a movable fish farm is a truly unique vessel concept. The initial designs are for a 558-foot-long vessel with a 197-foot beam using a trimaran design to create large tanks with metal cages to contain the fish.
