More than 2,500 years ago Phoenician mariners sailed to Mediterranean and southwestern European ports. The Phoenicians were the great merchants of ancient times. They sold rich treasures from many lands.
These Phoenicians (the Canaanites, or Sidonians, of the Bible) were Semitic people. Their country was a narrow strip of the Syrian coast, about 160 miles (260 kilometers) long and 20 miles (32 kilometers) wide. The area now comprises Lebanon and parts of Syria and Israel. Their territory was so small that the Phoenicians were forced to turn to the sea for a living. They became the most skillful shipbuilders and navigators

El Cabildo proyecta este jueves a partir de las 20:00 horas en TEA Tenerife Espacio de las Artes el documental histórico Tras la estela del Valbanera, del director Federico José Pérez, quien asistirá a este evento de carácter gratuito. La pieza refleja un episodio de la emigración canaria protagonizada por este barco que se hundió en 1919 en aguas caribeñas sin dejar supervivientes.
La cinta, rodada entre las Isla Canarias y Cuba, recoge durante 65 minutos la trama de este acontecimiento

Tal vez por cercanía al histórico lugar o por pura coincidencia (me temo que lo primero), pero lo cierto es que si uno se acerca al lugar de nacimiento de don Blas de Lezo y Olavarrieta en la localidad guipuzcoana de Pasajes (Pasaia, en euskera y de modo oficial) lo que observa son pintadas con PP y PSOE en una diana (imagen de cabecera). The year 2014 was indeed one of intriguing activity in the Polar Regions. The maritime world and public in general began the year captivated by the almost hourly updates from the Russian ship Akademik Shokalskiy, captive in the Antarctic Ice.

It certainly wasn’t the first time a ship had become beset in polar ice conditions, nor will it be the last. What caught the attention of the world was that modern technology and the thirst for a moment in the spotlight prompted regular Internet postings by blog and other means highlighting the “plight” of the ship from several onboard.
